Punjabi Market ~ SATB a cappella
Words and music by Amy, this sweet love song takes place in Vancouver, BC, Canada, in a neighbourhood known as the Punjabi Market. A celtic-influenced song, it was first made popular by Celtic band Mad Pudding. Amy arranged her song for choir at the request of musica intima, one of Canada's finest chamber vocal ensembles, for a tour of Canadian music they did in 2006. This arrangement is accompanied by vocal sounds inspired by Punjabi percussion, which is commonly heard in concert venues and other spaces around Vancouver. The story is about a young woman (basically Amy when she wrote the song) who goes into a sari store in Vancouver's Punjabi Market (as Amy often did when she lived in that area), where the handsome young salesman behind the counter turns out to be the man of her dreams (a fictional ending!). It is an upbeat and whimsical tribute to young love in Vancouver. It is published by Cypress Choral Music, * but Amy does not approve of the made-up introduction by the publisher about the song, nor the front-page visual, which immediately misleads the viewer to think it is an Indian song. It has no Indian roots except some inspiration for some of the percussive sounds. If you prefer to buy the piece directly from Amy please email Amy. *
The performance of Punjabi Market in the video below is by St. Patrick's Secondary School in Vancouver.
